Fish vs. hybrid surfboards: which should you ride?

How the two most popular small-wave boards differ, how they ride, and how to choose and size yours.

Quick answer

Choose a fish if you want speed and long, flowing lines in small, clean waves. Choose a hybrid if you want shortboard-style turns with extra paddle power. Both work best once you can ride along the face of a wave. If you only want one small-wave board, a hybrid is usually the more versatile pick.

What is a fish?

A fish is a short, wide, flat board with a swallow tail and twin or quad fins. It was born in the 1960s and 70s for small California waves. The flat bottom and wide outline let it plane quickly and hold speed when the waves are weak. It feels loose and playful, and it rewards a smooth, flowing style.

What is a hybrid?

A hybrid, also called a groveler or small-wave shortboard, takes a shortboard and adds width and volume, especially in the nose and tail. It keeps the shortboard’s feel and turning ability, but paddles and planes much better in small surf. For many surfers, a hybrid is the board they ride most days.

How they ride differently

Paddling and wave catching

Both paddle better than a shortboard. A fish usually has a bit more width and flatter rocker, so it often catches the weakest waves slightly easier.

Speed

A fish is built for speed down the line. Once it gets going, it keeps moving through flat sections. A hybrid generates speed more through pumping and turning, like a shortboard.

Turning

A fish prefers wide, drawn-out turns and can feel slidey when you push it hard. A hybrid turns tighter and holds better in the steep part of the wave, so it feels closer to a shortboard.

Bigger or steeper waves

When waves get overhead or hollow, a twin-fin fish can slide out. A hybrid with a thruster setup handles more power. A quad fish sits in between.

Which one should you choose?

Choose a fish if…Your waves are usually small and soft, you love speed and a smooth, flowing style, and you already have a board for bigger days.
Choose a hybrid if…You want one board for most conditions, you like shortboard-style turns, and your waves range from small to head high.
Choose a mid-length if…You are still learning to ride along the face, or you want even more glide. See our best mid-length surfboards.
Get both if…You surf often. Many surfers ride a fish on clean, small days and a hybrid when the waves have more punch.

How to size a fish or hybrid

Start from your normal shortboard, or from your weight and level if you do not have one yet.

  • Fish: ride it 2–6″ shorter than your shortboard. Aim for about 0.45–0.5 liters per kilogram if you are intermediate.
  • Hybrid: ride it 2–4″ shorter than your shortboard, with 1–3 liters more volume.
Example: 175 lb (79 kg) intermediateLengthVolume
Fish5’4″–5’8″36–40 L
Hybrid5’6″–5’10”34–38 L

Frequently asked questions

Is a fish or a hybrid better for small waves?

Both are great. A fish is usually faster and looser in very small, soft waves. A hybrid turns more like a shortboard and handles a wider range of conditions.

Can a hybrid replace my shortboard?

For many surfers, yes. A hybrid works in most everyday waves. You may still want a shortboard or step-up for powerful, overhead days.

Is a fish good for intermediate surfers?

Yes. A fish is a great board once you can ride along the face. It helps you learn to generate speed and flow.

What is a groveler surfboard?

A groveler is another name for a hybrid built for very small, weak waves. It is short, wide and flat, with plenty of volume.

Do fish surfboards turn well?

Fish prefer long, smooth turns. They can feel loose or slide out in tight, vertical turns, which is where a hybrid or shortboard performs better.
